Thank you for contacting Acer America. Your computer has the capability to reinstall the original factory software without needing to use CD’s, as long as the hidden PQSERVICE partition still exists, and the Master Boot Record has not been damaged.

*Please note, this will erase all data on your hard drive. Back up all important information prior to following these steps.*

There are 2 ways to access the eRecovery feature:

1. If Windows Will Start
At the windows desktop, close all open programs and windows. Press ALT (located to the left of the space bar) and F10 at the same time, then release. A program should start up called Acer eRecovery. Follow the onscreen instructions. You want to choose Recovery Actions, then Install the factory default system.

2. If Windows Will Not Start
Shut down the system. Press the power button to turn the system on, as soon as you release the power button, press ALT on the keyboard and start tapping F10. The ALT key is located to the left of the space bar and the F10 key is along the top of the keyboard. Continue holding ALT and tapping F10 as the unit boots up. It should show a screen stating “Starting Acer eRecovery”, when this screen comes up you can release the keys on the keyboard. Follow the onscreen prompts. The default password will be 000000. Next you will need to choose “recovery actions”, then on the next screen choose “restore factory default settings”. This will erase your hard drive and reinstall the original factory settings and programs.

If you are unable to start this process, please contact Acer Technical Support at 1-800-816-2237 M-F 7am-9pm CST and Sat-Sun 8am-5pm CST excluding holidays.

Respectfully,
Acer America

Dear Acer,

How am I supposed to press keys to activate a process when my keyboard isn’t working?

Love,

  1. Have you tried a USB keyboard (assuming you have access to one)?

Aside from your problem sounding like hardware failure in the first place, because many BIOS systems have different peripheral drivers than major OS packages ACER may have suggested this course of action assuming that is your situation. Then again the tech that fielded your question could also be an incompetent jackass…

    I recommend phoning.

  3. What amraswolf said, or just get a new one. The Sony CR220 is $1049 at Best Buy, I just got one for Preety and she adores it. Lenovo ThinkPad T61s are pretty badass too, just bought my CEO one for $1400 with an 8-hour battery.

  4. (continuing from the Seattle group)

My husband and I just cam from B-town too! That is so strange! Do I know you? I’ve working all over out there… Starbucks, baffaLouies, Chipotle Village pantry… and my husband worked at Dagwoods before he graduated. When did you move out here to Seattle?
I’m actually driving back to Bloomington in two weeks and helping our friend move out here to Seattle to live with us. As much as I despise Indiana, I’ve been a teensy homesick, so I’m excited about going back for a couple of nights.

    • I just arrived early Thursday morning – took a road trip out that was gorgeous and brough me joy.
You may know me… I worked at the Runcible Spoon. I’m the girl with the blue mohawk.

      So weird!
Say hi if you see me about, I’m adding you on here, and if you do ever care to talk to someone who will know what you mean when referring to bits of Bloomington, get in touch.

  5. Canned tech answers for the win. It is a rare and monumento7s occasion when the big computer companies actually take the time out to read your whole tech request. G’luck with them. Getting consumer shitty with them if you have to. It might feel like an act, getting all upset, but it will save you time in the long run rather than being polite with them.
